PM Mitsotakis meets in Volos with eight mayors, during a tour of Magnisia prefecture
The public projects in the prefecture of Magnisia, central Greece, are worth over 650 million euros, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at the town hall in Volos on Friday, at a meeting with eight mayors of the region he is touring.
As a government, he noted, "our job is to unlock the development potential and to be able to help local communities at regional or municipal level to resolve outstanding issues from the past, and to prescribe a framework of interventions that will deal with future challenges."
Referring to civil protection ahead of the summer and its inevitable fires, he called on more collaboration of local authorities with the central one. "Obviously, we need the collaboration of local communities and volunteer organizations to go through this summer without experiencing what happened last year," the prime minister said, referring to the fatal and destructive fires breaking out in Greece in 2021.
Mitsotakis also referred to the many challenges the government faced, including the energy crisis. Households and businesses will begin to see "a very broad energy support plan" in their electricity bills, he reiterated. "We will overcome this difficulty as well and be judged on our entire work, a work with national, regional, and local features," he said, an indirect reference to national elections due in 2023.
After the meeting which included several ministers and MPs, the PM walked around Volos and chatted with residents, stressing that "the self-confident Greece is and will be a project involving all of us," as the country faces and resolves its challenges.
After leaving Volos, Mitsotakis paid a visit to the nearby Hellenic Air Force base in Anchialos, home of the 111th Combat Wing where he served his obligatory military duty.
