The lack of a complete fingerprint that can be used for identification can be explained by the fact that the knife was handled by several people before it was handed in as evidence, the same sources said.

Kostopoulos was attacked and beaten by the owner of a central Athens jewellery shop and others on September 21, in what his assailants claimed was a bungled robbery attempt. According to his attackers, he was wielding the knife submitted into evidence at the time.

The 33-year-old died on his way to hospital shortly after the beating but the results of an autopsy were inconclusive, finding that his injuries were not sufficient to cause death.

Two people have been charged in connection with the attack on Kostopoulos, including a man who said he disarmed Kostopoulos and took the knife away from him.
