Greek retail sales volume up 3.2 pct in August

Greek retail sales volume rose 3.2 pct in August with only the fuel category recording a decline, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Wednesday.

The statistics service, in a monthly report, attributed this development to sales increases in furniture/home appliances (6.7 pct), supermarkets (6.1 pct), bookstores (3.2 pct), department stores (2.9 pct), food/tobacco/alcohol (2.1 pct), pharmaceuticals/cosmetics (0.8 pct) and clothing/footwear (0.7 pct). On the other hand the volume of sales fell in fuel/lubricants (2.2 pct).

The retail sales volume general index (turnover in fixed prices) rose 3.2 pct in August compared with the same month last year, while on a monthly basis, the index was down 1.3 pct from July 2018. The seasonally-adjusted index fell 0.9 pct in August from July.

The turnover index (turnover in current prices) rose 4.8 pct in August from August 2017, while on a monthly basis it fell 1.8 pct from July 2018. The seasonally-adjusted index fell 0.7 pct in August from July.
