Athens welcomes New Year at central Syntagma Square stage
Athens welcomed the New Year with fireworks and music at a central stage set up on Syntagma Square and a message by Mayor Kostas Bakoyiannis to "hug each other and let no one stand alone at the turn of the year."

A crowd started gathering early on Tuesday night at the central square of the Greek capital, where a music program began at 10:00 p.m.
Bakoyiannis joined the stage MC's for the countdown to the New Year.
Performers included the Melisses band, a gymnastics team ("Wolves") and DJs.
