Five arrested and 37 detained following attack on police in Kypseli's Agiou Georgiou Square
Police reported that 37 people were detained, of which five were later placed under arrest, during a mob attack on police officers in the Athens district of Kypseli during the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to police sources, the incidents occurred when police officers arrived to investigate a complaint made at 1:00 on Saturday by an anonymous caller to the police emergency number, who said that he had been stabbed and robbed by unidentified individuals in the area. Upon arriving, the police were set upon by individuals gathered in Agiou Georgiou Square and MAT riot police were called in, who were then attacked with stones and bottles by some 250 people.
Police used tear gas to fend off the attackers and calm was restored at about 3:00.
