Supreme Court prosecutor issues memo on animal abusers to public prosecutors
Greek Supreme Court (Areios Pagos) prosecutor Olga Smyrli reminded public prosecutors throughout the country to follow the law of immediate arrest, but to also observe fully the letter of the law, in cases of animal abuse.
In the same circular, she also requested they immediately notify police for arrests if animals are abused or treated badly in any way. Conversely, prosecutors should also be notified by police of the actions taken in such cases, including public calls for intervention, regardless of whether in person, by phone, or online.
On the occasion of her recent appointment in a relevant position for cases of human and animal abuse, Smyrli noted a recent rise in incidents of animal abuse and said regional prosecutors should also report local cases and actions taken as well.
