Constitutional revision is “played” by Samaras

The important development of Constitutional revision is expected to begin next Wednesday at a special event of New Democracy, as Antonis Samaras will attempt to put the second pillar of reconstruction after the economy. In an effort to change the climate in society, Samaras will try to bring up the issue of Constitutional reform and policy changes needed for further democratization of the political system of our country. The Prime Minister had opened the issue from the election campaign of 2012 and then with his command Dimitris Avramopoulos came up with 31 specific recommendations for such issues. In Maximos Mansion they believe that with the economy stabilizing, it’s necessary to adjust the political system for institutions to find their role. In this context, the proposals worked by the Defense Minister updated those that will boost outdated provisions of the Constitution and legislations which now are rejected by society, such as immunity and liability of law ministers.

At the core of the proposals tabled by the Prime Minister, will be the accountability of the political system and a number of provisions which are aimed at creating stable political system and the release of political opportunities that are currently locked in a large majority required for change, which will give birth to growth prospects. More specifically, according to reliable information of Newsbomb.gr, Samaras intends to announce changes in the status of members immunity and incompatibility, change for the election and strengthening of the powers of the President of the Republic, limits in terms of high ranked officials, the possibility of establishing private universities, the abolition of parliamentary privileges, as well as the abolition of the institution of party General Secretaries of the ministries with corresponding upgrading of the role of General Managers.

In question remains, if the prime minister will seek the reducing the number of members of the Parliament to 250 or 200 and this because he has previously opened the issue, but this doesn’t seem to find wide resonance in the blue caucus. Important parameter for the enactment of these proposals is the attitude of PASOK, which officially declares that it hasn’t agreed with New Democracy on specific changes, something that in the last days causes friction. Interlocutors of Evangelos Venizelos wonder where the president of PASOK stands in all this and why his view hasn’t been formally consulted, suggesting that we shouldn’t take for granted an agreement of the party with what the prime minister will propose.
