Merry... sales! Merry Christmas!
Severe weather in some parts of Britain could disrupt shoppers' plans with many prefer to order online instead.
A record eight million people are believed to have "slipped away" from festivities on Christmas Day to take advantage of online sales.
Dozens of retailers started sales early to cash in on families browsing on iPads and laptops in breaks between Christmas dinner, opening presents and afternoon entertainments, in some cases offering discounts of up to 84 per cent.
By noon, retailers including Harrods and Selfridges had run out of some of their most popular items. Shoppers trying to purchase designer handbags from Mulberry and Yves Saint Laurent, or Alexander McQueen dresses, received messages saying: "We are sorry but this item has just sold out."
The sales continue today online and in store at shops including John Lewis, Selfridges, Harrods and Debenhams.
Shops are expecting 10 million through their doors throughout the day, but severe weather in some parts could disrupt shoppers' plans with many expected to order online instead.
