Chancellor Merkel to meet IMF chief Lagarde
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet on Tuesday with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde.
It is widely expected that they will discuss the IMF's participation in the Greek programme.
In Germany, many consider that the IMF will most likely not participate in the programme that expires on August 20. The representative of the German conservatives on budget issues, Eckhardt Rehberg, told the Rheinische Post that the cost of the IMF's participation is excessive, since it is asking the German parliament to approve debt relief of about 100 billion euros. If this term was accepted, Rehberg said, the CDU will not insist on the IMF's participation, so the third program will be completed without the Fund.
