National Bank and Piraeus Bank announced adjustments to their transaction fees on Friday, following a call by the government to either cancel or suspend them.

In a statement, Greece's largest bank, National Bank, said that it would return fees charged by use of ATMs of other banks in location when it did not have either a branch or an ATM. It also said it would not apply a fee for printing out recent transactions, a choice available at ATMs, and it would cancel the fee for the reissuing and dispatch of a new PIN number to customers.

"National Bank remains vigilant in terms of its fees and at the same time works systematically to improve its customer experience through all its services," a statement said.

Piraeus Bank said its customers will not be charged any fees over cash withdrawals at other banks' ATMs on islands or wherever the bank does not have an ATM. The bank will absorb the cost of the other bank's charges, it said.

It also cancelled fees collected through ATMs of other banks for similar services to those of National Bank, above, and it committed to reviewing its pricing policy on all other services.

"The bank does not charge fees on the above services when its customers use its ATMs. At the same time, it continues to invest in even better services and products for its clients," it said.

The introduction of fees by banks drew particularly severe criticism, especially at remote islands that are not served by bank branches and rely served by few or no ATMs.

Earlier in the day Development & Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis told Antenna TV that by Monday all four banks in Greece would suspend planned charges and reduce those already introduced.

"We are in talks (with banks) and there will be a second wave of charge reductions in November," he noted, adding that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has asked banks to present a wide programme of support for consistent borrowers.
