Master antiflooding plan for Attica presented at central hotel in Athens
A master plan to protect Attica Region from flooding was presented at a central hotel in Athens hotel on Thursday, with the participation of ministers, mayors, regional officials, scientists and volunteer group representatives.
At a one-day conference on "Attica: Safe region, for the lives and assets of citizens," addresses were delivered by Ministers of Developments & Investments Adonis Georgiadis, Environment & Energy Kostas Skrekas, Climate Crisis & Civil Protection Christos Stylianidis, Alternate Interior Minister Stelios Petsas and Deputy Environment & Energy Minister Giorgos Amyras.
They said the plan would be supported financially and that NSRF funds allocated to Attica, the largest region of Greece that includes the capital of the country, would be raised by 30% for Civil Protection projects.
The antiflooding plan includes input by the University of Athens and the National Observatory of Athens, and their specialized departments. Issues discussed were clearing burned forestland, locating earthquake zones, dealing with the threat to houses built next to creeks and rivers, and setting aside areas with cages to treat injured birds and animals.
