A decision recently signed by Environment and Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas has activated a process for developing geothermal power in Greece, including a new legislative framework for its use for in the production of electricity, the environment and energy ministry said on Tuesday.

On the basis of this, tenders for the exploitation of geothermal fields throughout the country will be announced over the coming period, with the minister's decision outlining the procedures for the exploration, management and exploitation of geothermal resources.

"Developing geothermal power is a key government priority, in the framework of the targets under the National Plan for Energy and Climate, as it enhances the country's energy security by exploiting a domestic energy source while at the same time ensuring a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and bringing energy savings for consumers," the ministry said.

Possible geothermal energy sites in Greece that can be used to generate electricity, with temperatures exceeding 90C, can be found in Central and Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the islands of the Aegean and Eastern Central Greece.

The ministry promised that environmental protection and social consensus will be among the key criteria in assigning concessions, with priority given to the local community in any jobs created.

"The government's goal is to create a modern, stable and transparent investment framework for developing geothermal energy, with the strictest standards of safety and environmental protection. We are determined to make a new start, with clear, transparent rules for all, with full respect for local communities," Skrekas said, stressing that this was a clean and above all domestic source of energy with multiple benefits for society, the economy and the environment.
