"We are aware of the fact that the Greek people have been through a lot", Barthle noted, and added "however, if one looks at the primary surplus it becomes evident that Greece is on the right path. It may not have yet reached the stage of securing financing from the markets but the general impression in Germany and in Europe is that there is a lot of potential for the Greek economy."

He then stated that for Greece to attract foreign investments the state needs to provide trustworthy institutions; a stable legal system; reliable procedures and transparency; efficiency and speed for securing permits; and a reliable Land Registry.

In addition, Barthle declared that he is in favour of the Greek government's initiatives to broaden the income tax base and mildly increase salaries, on the condition that Greece will continue boosting its competitiveness.

Finally, referring to the role of the German-Greek Assembly, Barthle said that it its purpose is to upgrade the relations between the two countries through a dynamic Greek-German network of local government organisations and economic operators acting in both countries.
