Varvitsiotis stresses Greece's stabilising role in the wider Mediterranean region

Αlternate Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis referred to Greece's stabilising role and strong institutional prestige in the wider Mediterranean region, during Thursday's online presentation of a book entitled "International Community and Fragile States".

In particular, Varvitsiotis noted that "at the foreign ministry, we are closely monitoring developments in the field", given that the so-called "fragile states are an issue of particular concern in our own neighbourhood."

Speaking about the broader security architecture, he pointed out that "the export of knowledge from Greece could be a way in which we might also contribute to a reduction of fragile states which, as the author accurately noted, have increased by 30 pct in last decade." At the same time, he said, it would give Greek diplomacy the opportunity to access countries in the wider region based on the values of democracy, rather than the agenda used by others.

As a country with a stable democratic course and a member of the European Union, Varvitsiotis added, Greece "can use this experience to export democracy and stability." "When we negotiate with partners and friends, a great weapon we have in our hands is precisely the fact that we are an EU country with a strong institutional arsenal and we can show paths through which the improvement of democratic institutions in our neighbours could be an element for the security of the wider region."
