Greek police provide information on serious accident involving security car

The Hellenic Police ordered an inquiry into a traffic accident when a car on security detail ran into a motorcyclist while leaving Parliament, seriously injuring him, on Friday.

Police said the accident happened at 12:25 on March 12 on Vassilissis Sofias where the entrance to the Parliament is, and the car belongs to its division of personal protection for officials and vulnerable targets. The driver, a policeman, has been temporarily relieved of driving duties and the incident was reported to the Athens prosecutor.

In a separate development, and although not named by the police specifically, MP Dora Bakoyannis said in a Facebook post on Sunday that she was in Parliament plenary midday on the same day when a car assigned to her security "was involved in a traffic accident, resulting in the serious injury of a young man, 23, Iasonas." She added she was "deeply shattered" and had contacted the family to express support and assert the incident will be investigated in depth.

At a later clarification, police sources said the driver of the car was not arrested because the accident did not cause death and because the driver remained at the site and did not attempt to flee.
