Athens doctors protest forced pension of 86 doctors in the National Health System

The Athens Medical Association (AMA) protested "the abrupt departure of 86 experienced and accomplished doctors in key positions of the National Health System (NHS)" when they reached pension age, in a letter on Tuesday to Alternate Health Minister Mina Gaga, and called for their retention.

In its letter, the AMA cited a law published in 2022 that allows NHS doctors - particularly those specializing in anesthesiology and nephrology - to remain in their posts past their 67th birthday until December 31, 2022. According to the same law, doctors may apply to remain until the end of the year, as long as there is no ongoing application process for the same positions.
