PM Tsipras at Hellenic Air Force event: Gov't to pay back due revenues retroactively
The government made the strategic decision that Greece will stop being an outcast of the international community and observing developments" from the sidelines, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Wednesday evening, at an event celebrating the Hellenic Air Force (HAF).
At the Athens Concert Hall, Tsipras said that "Greece possesses a strong deterrent power devoted to maintaining peace, stability and security" in a region with high volatility, and said the country "respects and seeks excellent neighboring relations with adjacent countries. It doesn’t threaten anyone and is not threatened by any one country."
The premier also extolled the Air Force staff's courage, loyalty to duty and long-term service, and said that the government was mindful of the wage injustices they faced during the country's economic crisis.
He added that according to a draft law (tabled the same night in Parliament), the HAF personnel stood to benefit along with others serving the country from a total of 820 million euros that were not paid out during the crisis years and would be handed in one-off amounts to defense forces personnel, university professors, justices, doctors, and the Fire Brigade.
The "first positive fiscal measure coming to Parliament after August 21" will allow the restoration of the injustice "in full by the end of December," he said.
