Labour Min Achtsioglou: Up to 85 pct haircut on debt surcharges from 2002 to 2016

"The increase of the minimum wage and the abolition of the 'sub-minimum' wage for young people under 25 years old that is to be announced in the following days will increase 24 different benefits linked with the minimum income," said Labour Minister Effie Achtsioglou in an interview with Naftemporiki newspaper on Wednesday.

"These increases will be automatically incorporated into the benefits in February," she said, adding that the increase of the minimum wage will have multiple effects - not only for those receiving it but also for others, such as the unemployed, students or working mothers, with an estimated 300,000 people expected to gain from the benefits hike.

On the new, 120-installment debt settlement scheme to be offered by social security funds, Achtsioglou said that it will come into effect in early March. A haircut of up to 85 percent haircut on debt surcharges, she added, will offer a breather to thousands of insured that have accumulated debts from 2002 until 2016 and to those that, due to their debt to social security funds, are not able to claim a pension even though they meet the age and other requirements.
