Following the completion of an ultramodern double electrified highspeed rail line, whose first test run is to take place on Wednesday, the Proastiakos suburban railway currently running from Athens' international airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' to the town of Kiato is expected to reach as far as the coastal town of Egio in the north Peloponnese by the end of August.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis and ministry Secretary General Thanos Vourdas will be on the test run on a 72-kilometre section of the line that continues on from Kiato and includes three new stations, at Xylokastro, Akrata and Egio, and six stops at Diminio, Lykoporia, Lygia, Paralia Platanou, Diakopto and Eliki.

ERGOSE has completed the construction of the new modern infrastructure that includes six tunnels of a total length of 11 kilometres, eight escape tunnels with a total length of 1,700 metres, 19 rail bridges, 63 underpasses and 10 overpasses that allow the trains to reach high speeds exceeding 200 km/hour.

Wednesday's test run will be first first after eight years in which trains on the specific section have stopped running and is expected to greatly improve the daily lives of residents in the north Peloponnese when it is fully operational.

It is part of a larger project for an Athens-Patras double electrified rail line that will gradually replace the old single line and allow the use of highspeed trains. It comes complete with standard-width rails and comtemporary signalling, teleguidance and telecommunications systems, as well as a GSM-R mobile communications system for railways.

Once completed, the new rail line will reduce journey times while providing improved services and greater safety.

At this stage, all infrastructure (tunnels, bridges, earthworks etc), as well as stops and stations on the 72-km section of the line from Kiato to Egio are complete. Also completed in April, through a contract worth 227 million euros, was the construction of superstructure that enables trains to run on this section.
