Electricity gradually restored in fire areas of Greece, including water-pumping system
Restoration of power in areas affected by fires is continuing, the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) said on Sunday, while the network is being checked wherever conditions allow.
In Evia, where ongoing fires are out of control, the areas of Myrtia, Farakla and Metochi have had their power restored. Wherever the Fire Brigade can go through, technicians are able to inspect the network. The goal is to start as soon as possible to restore electricity in the areas within the regions of Istiea-Edipsos and Mantoudi-Agia Anna, HEDNO stressed.
In Evia, 7 lines of medium voltage are out. To restore power to nearly 13,000 homes the services must restore 900 wooden poles of the Public Power Corporation, 100 substations and 40km of medium and low voltage. A total of 100 technicians are working on the island.
Work is also progressing on certain other communities in central Greece and the Peloponnese In Laconia region, Eastern Mani is almost fully powered, except for five communities - Sidirokastro, Mirsini, Ligera, Konakia and Poliaravos.
Megalopolis and Gortynia are almost entirely back on the grid.
In Attica, a large number of households and businesses have had power restored, including Agios Stefanos, Kryoneri, Afidnes, Rodopolic, Varybobi, Thrakomakedones, Stamata, Drossopigi and Malakassa.
The electricity-powered water system pumps of the water company EYDAP are also back in operation, as are those in Dionyssos and Oropos. Pumping systems are being backed up with generators if necessary.
HEDNO said that a total of 690 staff and contractors are working to restore the system, while all technical staff holidays have been recalled and an emergency plan put in action. This includes additional staff rotations and on-guard duties.
