SYRIZA: Greece's 1821 uprising 'condensed political expectations & dreams for a new life

Two hundred years after the Greek Revolution "we honor the people's uprising for freedom, independence, democracy and justice," noted SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance in its message for Greek Independence Day 2023.

Greece's War of Independence in 1821 "was a turning point in the Greek nation's history for the establishment of the Hellenic Republic," as "that moment brought together political expectations and people's dreams for a new life."

In doing away with the Ottoman Turkish yoke, the main opposition party added, the Greek revolution and the heroism of the fighters of 1821 inspired other peoples, causing international admiration that led to the philhellenic movement.

For 200 years, Syriza said, "the Hellenic Republic has been gradually becoming orientated towards democratic values, the rule of law and true justice. Today, the orientation remains the same for the Greece of our future."
