FM Dendias to visit eastern Libya on Thursday

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias is to visit eastern Libya on Thursday and hold talks with the president of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh Issa, as well as with other Libyan officials, the Greek foreign ministry said.

During his visit to Libya, Dendias will deliver a donation of vaccines against the novel coronavirus on behalf of the Greek government.

In Benghazi, the Greek minister will attend an event that will present Greece's contribution to the UN World Food Programme for the restoration of the port of Benghazi.

The specific port is very important as gateway for humanitarian aid to sub-Saharan Africa, to help with food shortages' crisis facing that region.

Additionally, Dendias will have a meeting with the board of the Greek Community of Benghazi.

The Greek minister's discussions with top Libyan officials are expected to focus on strengthening collaboration between Greece and Libya, always on a basis of respect for international law and particularly the law of the sea, as well as on EU-Libya relations and developments in the region of the Mediterranean. Also expected to be discussed is the Constitutional basis for holding general elections in Libya as soon as possible.

Dendias had last visited eastern Libya in April 2021.
